Totals and order summary

Show customers a live order amount and an itemized summary, and check that both are correct.

Quick Answer

How does Neartail calculate the order total?

Order forms include an Order Amount field calculated with TOTAL(), which adds up price times quantity for every selected product. An Order Quantity field counts the items. A summary block shows each item with its unit price, quantity, and amount, so customers can check their order before they submit.

Forms created in Neartail already have these fields, in an Order Summary section and a Review and place your order section. You usually only need to check that they work.

Two bowls at $8 and one small soup at $4 make 1 a $20 Order Amount.

The fields your form uses

FieldCalculationShows
Order AmountTOTAL()The price of everything selected
Order QuantityQUANTITY()The number of units selected
Review blockBILL()A table of item, unit price, quantity, and amount

Customers can't change these fields, because Neartail calculates them.

Order Quantity adds different units together

One bowl and 0.5 kg of salad give an Order Quantity of 1.5. That's fine for a form with one kind of unit, but it can mislead on a mixed menu. To see how much of each product to make, use Sales by product.

Add a total to an imported form

Imported Google Forms don't always have an amount field. To add one:

Choose Add price field

In the editor, open the dropdown beside Add field in a section and choose Add price field.

Choose Order Amount

Then choose Standard calculation using TOTAL().

Place a test order

Confirm the amount matches your own arithmetic.

For prices written in the text of a Google Form, pass the currency symbol so Neartail can find them: TOTAL("$"). See Calculation functions.

Add the summary

In a section's description, type ${BILL()} where you want the table. It appears on the customer form once they select something, and shows Your cart is empty until then.

Select Configure under the block to adjust it.

Test before you share

Try each of these on the live form, not in the editor:

TestExpect
No products selected$0.00 and an empty cart
Two of one productTwice the price
Each variantThat variant's own price
A weight, such as 0.5 kgHalf the per-kg price
Remove an itemThe total drops

After submitting, check that the same amount appears on the order in your Orders board.

If a total looks wrong, see Troubleshooting.
